We live in an age of super color. Photography, television, movies and print material all use color beyond real life experience. We are significantly camera conditioned, so we not only love strong color but accept it as how the world looks. Paint manufacturers developed a bewildering array of colors to choose from. But, it is very difficult to use strong prismatic colors throughout a painting and achieve reality of atmosphere and a sense of contemplation. High chroma paintings are exciting but quickly exhaust our attention. They deliver so much information making it hard to stay focused.
When I started teaching new painting students, it became apparent that the vast array of colors offered overwhelmed them. As artists, we are visually tuned creatures, and I needed a way to show how color works that would put the information in front of the student as they worked. The Fletcher System has its limits and is certainly not the only way to approach color harmony, but it suggested a tool to help my students understand the principles of mixing color. From the Fletcher System, I developed my way of teaching students color management.
