Artists and photographers that love to debate the merits of the Rule of Thirds grid claim that it's a great beginner's tool for learning composition and that it's better than using nothing at all. Well, the truth is, using the Rule of Thirds for design is a complete waste of time and counterproductive for creating exceptional art.
Unfortunately, what many artists and photographers don't realize is that there isn't any benefit to using the Rule of Thirds grid regardless of skill level. The composition concept offers no flexibility, creates static, lifeless images and is a dead-end concept right from the start.
So, if you're an artist or photographer that's trying to decide whether or not you should use the Rule of Thirds grid or nothing at all, my advice is to toss the grid. Even though your compositions might not be as good as they could have been if you applied classical skill-based design techniques, at least they won't all have the same cookie-cutter appearance.
